9. WOMEN’S ISLAND
1995, three-dimensional medal, cast bronze, 80x97x37 mm

This medal is an expression of freedom. During the depression of the 1930's Hendrik Werkman, owner of a printing press in Groningen, printed more and more free compositions for lack of commissions.
During the war years he made many forged documents for the underground movement and gradually he had sought refuge in his printings finding it almost impossible to bear the world of his time. He achieved a great perfection in his stencil prints.

One of the most famous series is called Women’s Island: idyllic pictures with women, horses and palms. When I had finished this medal I thought the atmosphere so quiet, so pure, so virginal, that the title presented itself spontaneously.
